Shade

Set in a fictional town, Shade tells the story of a young girl with unusual eating habits–despite consuming large amounts of food she is unable to be satiated. Leaving her home, she encounters Clementi, a mysterious figure with possibly wicked intentions.

Filmed over six days on a micro budget, Shade was shot entirely on a consumer grade Sony miniDV camera. The actors were non-professionals, cast through friends and family or on the street.

About the Filmmakers

Natives of California, Cuyler Ballenger and Julian Tran cemented their friendship at UC Berkeley and have been working together on film and video projects for over five years. Shade is their first narrative short collaboration. They are currently at work on a film project about the Unabomber.
